Career Planning – Useful Tools To Enhance Your Career
These days it’s becoming harder and harder to get that top job. No longer are employees willing to hire just any well dressed Tom, Dick or Harry with some good clothes on. A successful job seeker needs to have a career plan and efficient career planning tools to ensure that their time on the unemployment line remains short. The most important thing though is to make sure you pick the right tools in your career planning kit.
The very first tool in every job seeker’s kit, is his or her resume. The resume should be complete and well organized as most companies are ready to reject an applicant if their resume is not impressive enough. Also it’s always handy to carry around more than one copy. In fact most counselors will suggest that you carry more than enough resumes, after all opportunities come to those who are ready for them. Also it’s very important to maintain an electronic copy of your resume, as most modern day employers prefer that to the conventional paper resume.
Apart from just having a resume, a job seeker should make sure his resume is well written. One of the first things employers look for is the statement of objective. This statement allows the job seeker to emphasize his personal goals while paralleling them with the company’s own ambitions. The statement of objective almost acts as a mission statement, and an effective one can on its own open some doors.
Apart from its effect on the employer, the statement also helps the job seeker focus on his ambitions and help him stick to one course. An impressive mission statement might just be the thing which would lead an experienced person to make that all important career change. A mission statement does not however need to be lengthy, a simple direct and clear-cut statement may be all that’s required to hone the job seeker’s focus and keep him on track.
Many companies and universities have begun to emphasize the importance of programs that help narrow a job seeker’s choices and help one find the correct career path. It doesn’t hurt to include one of these planning guides or career tests along with your other career planning tools. In fact some universities even provide these guides to students and the local public for free. These guides resemble a personality test and help the job seeker realize his ambitions and focus on one particular career path. These programs can play a vital role in helping the job seeker further understand his career options, not only for the short term, but also as to where that job may lead them in the future.
These are just a few examples of the many career-planning tools available to modern day job seekers. It’s important to take all the help you can get and remember not to venture out into the rat race alone!
