Letters are typically the most widely-used form of communication. These had survived the technological advancement, and are still in existence due to the following reasons:

1.	Writing letters do not require the use of special devices, thus making it a cheap form of communication.

Even long distance communication is made possible even with limited means. This can be made at home or almost anywhere as long as paper and a writing material such as pen, is available.

2.	If the letter is to be used as a promotional or advertising device, it could cover a much wider range of market or consumers since addresses are much easier to determine unlike email addresses which are personalized.

3.	For purposes or record-keeping, letters are a much easier form of validating information that can be stored and kept for future reference.

Cover letters on the other hand are used mainly to introduce a certain topic or idea.

This may be done either through the regular form of writing on a piece of paper or encoding the same on an email message following the regular format for letter writing.

The most common use of cover letters is as follow:

1.	For sending resumes for a certain job vacancy.

All application forms or resumes that are sent to an employer should have an accompanying cover letter that would introduce the intention of the sender to apply for a specific post.

2.	To introduce a certain product or service that the senders wants to convey or offer to the reader.

These are most commonly found on submitted quotations or in expressing the intention to join a particular bidding. An overview of the product or service is discussed to grab the attention of the reader.

The main idea of which is to arouse interest on the part of the reader to consider the proposal submitted by the sender.
There are a wide variety of attention-grabbing cover letters. All of which have the intention of directing the reader to consider the attached proposal.

The following should be taken into consideration when drafting a good cover letter for applying for a vacant post:

1.	The opening paragraph

This should state or explain your intentions on sending your resume. It would be of great help if one would indicate where he or she had heard of the said job vacancy.

This may likewise include a brief overview about the individual’s background or some personal information such as the degree attained or past posts held.

2.	Middle paragraph

This is the part from where the individual states why he or she is interested in the said post. He or she should expound on his or her selling points such as past work experiences that could be of great contribution for the position being applied for.

3.	Closing paragraph

The closing part should state the availability of the sender of the letter for an interview or that other needed information by the reader would be readily provided by the sender upon request of the former.

Below is an example of a simple cover letter:

10 May 2006

MR. GEORGE LANE
Real Estate Broker
Goodland Fields Estates
Vancouver, CA 22182

Dear Mr. Lane:

I had been immensely moved with speech that you have delivered at the St. James Auditorium last April 20.

This had enabled me to reflect and realize that I may have a good career as a Real Estate Broker in your good company, given my past experience as a sales agent and my inherent passion for interaction with various types of people. Attached herewith is my resume for your reference.

I am looking forward to being able a part of your good institution’s team. Should you have other questions, I would be in Vancouver next week and would be calling your office to answer any other inquiry. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
(signature of the sender in handwritten form)
Michael Longland

Graduating from college is probably one accomplishment you can take pride in. All your hard work has finally paid off. You are aching to enter the job market and put what you have learned to good use and finally earn that first paycheck. Eventually, you find out that looking for a decent job is not as easy as it seems. Most employers are looking for someone with experience. And you have no professional experience to speak of.

As a fresh graduate, it is best to target entry-level jobs as employers will generally expect not too much from you in terms of work experience. They do expect, however, that you have a degree majoring in a subject related to the role you are seeking. They will expect you to have some general experience learned from summer or part-time jobs and other community or volunteering involvements. So, how do you best present this information? This is where a functional resume format plays an important role.

It is applicable if you have just graduated and have no professional experience. Using a functional resume format, you can put more emphasis on your skills and competencies rather than a chronological order of your employment. As such, a functional resume format is popular among college students and fresh graduates keen to enter the corporate world for the first time.

Making a Functional Resume Format

1. Start your resume with a clearly defined career objective. Ensure that your career objective is relevant to the position that you are applying for. Your career objective must also indicate what you can offer to the company in terms of the skills and experience that you bring.

2. Your educational attainment is listed next on a good functional resume format. Include the university name, location, year graduated and subjects you majored in. List honors and achievements you received as this shows excellence in what you commit to. Trainings and courses undertaken can also be listed in a functional resume format as long as it supports the requirements of the role.

3. An important part of a functional resume format is the section for skills and competencies. Rather than listing work experiences in order, use the required skills and competencies as subheadings. If a role requires someone with an experience in customer relations, then you can use “Customer Relations” or “Customer Service Skills” as subheading. Then list duties and tasks that support and validate this competency. You will have a lot to work out from by considering your part-time or summer jobs, volunteer works, school projects you headed and the like. If you have good proofreading skills acquired from working for the school paper, then highlight it if you want to be employed as a proofreader. A functional resume format can work wonders if done right.

4. Include a section for references in the last part of the resume. As a recent graduate, you can use teachers and professors as references. However, you need to let them know beforehand.

Now, that you have a basic idea of the structure of a functional resume format, put that knowledge to good use. If you need some samples of how it is presented, the internet is a good place to search for. It offers plenty of useful samples of a functional resume format to use as a guide in making your own.

You might be surprised to learn that there is still a shortage of oil rig workers in the petroleum industry. The demand for oil rig jobs are greater than the current supply of workers. These jobs are physically demanding but usually financially rewarding. A job in the oil and gas industry may just fit you like a glove.

The most entry level jobs are found in petroleum production. This is generally the process of extracting oil from the various reservoirs on land and offshore. Oil rig platforms are used to extract petroleum from reservoirs located underneath the water. These platforms are big steel structures that holds the drilling equipment and gives housing to oil rig workers. The crude oil that is extracted is sent to oil refineries via sub-sea pipelines.

An oil rig is usually a very dirty and noisy place to work. The living quarters may be a bit cramped, so if you like your privacy, it may not be for you. You will however have a place to sleep and rest. Meals are served in the dining area. Normally you work for six months on the rig followed by six months onshore leave.

What are the possible benefits of oil rig jobs?

There is currently a shortage of oil workers and thus job vacancies that needs to be filled.
Your oil employer normally pays for your room and board. Many oil companies can offer you benefits such as various insurance and profit sharing plans. Petroleum production is a global industry.

You do not need to have a college education to get a job in the oil and gas industry. You can start at the bottom with a roustabout or roughneck job on an oil rig. You can then work your way up from there if you want to. Other types of oil rig jobs that you can learn to do are driller, derrickhand, motorhand or toolpusher.

You may also start your career by working onshore before moving to the higher paying offshore oil jobs. This way you can gain some experience in the oil industry before applying for oil rig jobs such as engineer, sub-sea engineer, drilling supervisor, mud engineer and others.

Keep in mind that oil rig jobs can be dangerous because of the volatile substances and difficult weather conditions involved in the extraction of petroleum from the sea bed. In the past accidents and storms have led to people being injured and killed. It is a risky yet adventurous career path to follow.

There are thousands of oil platforms scattered around the world and there is a demand for oil rig jobs that needs to be satisfied. You may or may not be interested.

Whoever said that your career choice doesn’t matter has missed out on an essential part of a person’s existence. For most of us, our careers help define partly who we are what our goals and values are and what’s important for us. This is probably why people spend time, money and a lot of effort to discover the best career for them. So how do you know which career path to follow? Here are some key points to keep in mind:

Ask what you want to do with your life.

Life is too short to waste time on getting an education or training that will be useless later on. However, you can’t really know for sure what the future holds. Your best bet is to try and prepare yourself.

To discover which career choice is the best for you, ask yourself what you truly want to end up doing years from now. Do you like adventure? Do you like to solve mysteries and do police work? Can you spend days on end in front of a computer designing games? Is creating food masterpieces your dream job? Do you find litigation and court cases exciting?

Discovering your career choice is usually your cue to which type of education or degree to obtain.

Determine your skills and interests.

What is it that you do best? Is this something that you enjoy? Most people discover their career by finding out what they like to do. Sometimes, they even encounter it by accident, by being exposed to an activity that peaks their interest. Find out what sort of things make you happy or give you fulfillment. Check your hobbies, the type of things you like to focus on.

Use your personality as a basis.

What’s your personality like? Are you the type of person who likes to work with a group of people or do you prefer to work alone? Can you handle strict deadlines and a rapidly changing environment? Do you like the prospect of travel in your work?

Are you creative, good at figures, meticulous and detail-oriented? Do you like lots of flexibility? If you’re a night owl, for example, choosing a career that requires you to work early might be unsatisfactory for you later.

Consider what you value most.

Once you’ve embarked on a career, you’ll find that you will be spending plenty of time in your job. What do you want to develop in yourself? What do you want to be? Do you want to save lives by healing people or do you want to build communities by developing land?

Do you want a career that lets you stay close to your family or perhaps you don’t mind one that lets you travel from place to place? Do you want to earn lots of money or is job satisfaction more important for you?

Research.

Find out what sorts of jobs are out there. You could be fixated on a career choice that might turn out to be uninteresting once you find out about other possibilities. Open your mind to other opportunities. Read about different careers what they require, what you can learn, the type of competition you will be facing, how much you’ll stand to earn, the type of people you’ll meet and the possibilities for job growth.

Careers with law degree are varied and abundant. Graduating with a law degree will open doors for many possibilities and opportunities. Attending law school prepares you to think analytically, become a good problem solver and mediator as well as develops your persuasive writing techniques and teaches you to be very detail oriented. These skills are useful in any profession, and as a result, lawyers can be found in many different settings. Law students can find careers in business, real estate, publishing, the arts, education, social services and politics.

Traditional Careers with Law Degree

Traditional careers for lawyers include going into private practice, law firm, law department in a corporation, or government agency.

1.	Private Practice

In a private practice, you would work in a small, medium or large sized firm, made up of few attorneys to hundreds of them. Most often, small private practice firms focus on a specific type of law. Large private practice firms employ a large number of lawyers in many different areas of the law. Regardless of firm size, you would start your career as an associate, or entry level lawyer. While in this position, you would spend your time producing legal documents, writing briefs, researching topic assigned by partners. The next step in the law firm hierarchy is becoming a partner. Partners not only decide what cases are accepted by the firm but also receive more of the firm earnings.

2.	Government

In government organizations you could work at the local, state or federal level. The benefit of government law jobs is that you can practice any area of the law. Some common positions are the District Attorney and Public Defenders, Attorney General and Department of Justice Lawyers.

3.	Corporations

Corporations of all types usually have a number of lawyers working for them, otherwise known as in-house counsel. In these types of positions you would most likely have one client and deal with any legal issues that come up. Typically, corporate jobs will allow you to work less hours and have a fixed salary.

4. Academics

A relatively small amount of lawyers works in law schools. Those that do, usually serve as faculty members, specializing in one or more subjects.

Alternative Careers with Law Degree

There are many non traditional ways to use your law degree. One example are non profit organizations. Because law school develops strong persuasive writing skills, these skills can then be applied to obtaining grants and funding. These same skills are also useful in positions such as developmental officers at universities, hospitals and political campaigns. Other alternative careers that rely on problem solving and analytical skills are those of corporate executives, bankers or school administrators.

Due to the many useful skills you will learn in law school, do not worry about your career options. This degree program will prepare you to work in a number of different settings, often settings not directly tied to law. Even if you practice law for a few years and decide that a career in law is not for you – many alternative career options are at your disposal. Keep your eyes open and be proactive.

To teach and become a teacher is the dream of many college grads. To realize this dream, you must have a couple of things in order, as competition for jobs heats up and salary levels going through the roof. To begin with, your grades through out your academic career must be more than impressive. But more importantly than this, your resume and cover letter combination is the instrument that will either get you the job interview or not.

First of all, if you are a new graduate having no real experience in teaching, you can compensate for this by taking up a substitute teacher’s position so that you are able to mention this in the résumé and cover letter. This will come in handy when highlighting your accomplishments. Along with your academic merits, highlight classroom accomplishments, such as how students began scoring better grades under your instruction, or how you volunteered for difficult or unusual assignments.

Let Your Personality And Passion Shine Through

Your teacher’s cover letter should reflect your strengths and your dreams of becoming a teacher. The more experienced you are, the better your chances are. Also, since teaching requires a love of the profession, you should be sure to project your enthusiasm and passion for helping others to learn. You should also include whatever teaching experience you have, including your stint as a substitute teacher and any overseas teaching experiences.

Follow The Format

Make sure that your cover letter is three paragraphs long, because breaking the letter into too many paragraphs without clear direction will disinterest and bore the reader. Open the conversation with the first paragraph introducing yourself and why you are applying for the job. This means making reference to the job advertisement or any reference through which you became aware of the job vacancy. Conclude the last paragraph on a positive note while stating your intentions to follow up later (and then do follow up!). This brings us to the all- important second paragraph, where you should speak about your credentials and why you think you are the best candidate for the position. Keeping the body of this paragraph short and to the point is crucial to hold the recruiter’s interest. You make bullet points to highlight your accomplishments, but keep it limited. Your cover letter should mention your passion for helping others succeed.

Even more crucial in a teaching cover letter, than among cover letters for other professions, is to avoid typos, spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. Think about it from the employer’s point of view. If you can’t avoid these mistakes in your own work, how can you teach it to others?

What makes the teaching profession different from all others is that your job is specifically to prepare others for the working world. Accuracy, intelligence, passion and job commitment are the keys to being successful in teaching. Make sure that these traits come through in your cover letter, and you are well on your way to landing that coveted teaching position.

If it is not economically feasible for you to pay for a resume service, you can use a free Word resume template. A free sample resume can help you create a resume quickly. The layouts are already prepared, so you don’t waste time trying to setting the layouts yourself. Free resume templates are used a lot, and you are able to edit them to your liking.

Free Microsoft Word samples are like other free sample resumes. Having a good resume sample can shave off time in that they’re already formatted. They also have free resume samples that can be presented in a professional manner. The Microsoft samples are also tailored to put in the information that is needed.

The free Microsoft resumes have different formats. If you’re using the software, the resume package is pre-installed. The package includes Professional, Contemporary and Elegant templates that you can use. The Microsoft resume templates also have different formats: Entry Level, Chronological, Functional and Professional. Also included in the resume package of the software is a resume builder. The resume builder guides you through the steps of creating your resume. You just click and enter the information as requested.

You can find Word resumes online by typing in “free Word Resume Template”. To access free sample resumes from the Microsoft® website itself, go to the website and search for them. Follow the instructions for downloading.

You can create a presentable resume from the free Word samples, if you choose to use them. However, there are some people who are against using these free resumes because they consider them “cookie-cutter”. In other words, your resume doesn’t stand out because you used the same resume that many others used. Within the different formats and styles, you should be able to select one that best fits you. You can also modify it to your specifications.

The free Word resume templates differ from the pre-installed ones in the software. The purpose is to find a sample resume that is different and stands out. The free Word resume sample can do what other resumes can do. They provide formatting with headings and sections in the right place. The resume templates also include different fonts and designs, and it’s easy to enter the information you need.

A career flying off-shore helicopters can be filled wit excitement and challenge. Off shore flying refers to flying in support of the oil and gas industries. Off shore helicopter pilots transport equipment and personnel to and from oil rigs from strategically located shore bases. Off- shore flying is the biggest employer of helicopter pilots worldwide and as the need for energy increases the need for more pilots to support the energy industry will also increase. The major areas for off shore helicopter operations in the United States are the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska but many regions of the world have off shore rigs operating and use helicopters for support. A wide variety of different helicopters are used to include Bell 407s, Sikorsky S-76s, Eurocopter EC-135s, Bell 430s and the new Sikorsky S-92.

Off shore helicopter operators on the US Gulf Coast typically operate under VMC (visual meteorological conditions) while those in Alaska spend a lot of time operating under IMC (instrument meteorological conditions). If you want to do this type of flying as a career you’re entering at a good time. There is currently a lack of pilots that is only going to widen as increasing numbers of veteran pilots retire. This pilot benefits the pilots in many ways. First it allows pilots to be more particular when choosing a company to work for. Second it puts upward pressure on salaries, raises, bonuses, and benefits in order to attract and retain qualified pilots. Third it forces employers to improve working conditions particularly at shore bases where pilots spend most of their time when not flying.

Presently, at least in the Gulf of Mexico, helicopter operators require new pilots to have approximately 1000hrs of PIC time as well as an instrument rating. With the increasing demand for pilots operators are developing ways to decrease the numbers of hours needed to qualify for a position.

The work schedules involved in off shore oil support operations vary widely. You’ll fly approximately four hours during an 8 hour shift. Some companies use a one week on one week off rotation. Others use two weeks on two weeks off, and still others use different variations.

For pay most U.S. operators pay between $50,000 and $80,000 per year. Volunteering to fly overtime can increase pay.

As the worlds appetite for energy increases the energy companies will respond by tapping new sources of oil. This creates a bright future for anyone who’s interested in flying off-shore helicopters.

In the absence of a significant catastrophe like a hurricane or earthquake, finding a job as an insurance adjuster can prove challenging. The field for independent adjusters can be particularly tricky and those looking to break into the industry need every competitive advantage available to them. Knowing how to write an industry-focused insurance adjuster resume can provide new and experienced adjusters alike with a particularly unique advantage.

Crafting a powerful and effective resume for work as a claims adjuster obviously requires first understanding what particular qualities hiring companies look for. Here are 5 keys to a great resume based upon the particular needs of adjusting firms and insurance carriers:

Key #1: People Skills

Insurance claims adjusters should possess excellent people skills and hiring companies will certainly take notice of a resume that paints a picture of superior interpersonal communication. You don’t have to be Dale Carnegie, but you should be able to demonstrate an ability to deal with a wide variety of people in various stages of stress, anxiety, and agitation. Emphasize in your resume the polite, professional, and cordial manner with which you have effectively dealt with people under the aforementioned conditions.

Key #2: Construction/Engineering Experience

If you are applying for a position as a residential property adjuster, you will most certainly want to highlight your experience with residential construction. Do you have a working knowledge of how a house is put together? Do you know the difference between soffit and fascia? If so, how do you know? Have you worked on a construction crew? Operated as a general contractor? Helped your uncle out with building his deck? Adjusting firms in particular do not want to devote significant amounts of time in training their adjusters in basic construction terminology. Allay their fears immediately by highlighting your facility with the property construction pertinent to the position you are applying for.

Key #3: Computer Skills

The days of hand-written estimates are essentially over for the professional insurance adjuster. Estimates are written and submitted electronically and if you know your way around a computer it will be greatly to your advantage as you put together your resume. Many companies will not even consider a new hire unless he or she is comfortable using Xactimate 24/25 or MSB Integriclaim (the most commonly used property estimating programs). If you don’t know these programs consider taking a course in Xactimate or IntegriClaim. If you are unable to take a course, at the very least you should express clearly in your resume an ability to use Windows-based software. If you are completely computer illiterate, you may consider taking a Basic Computing course before you seriously pursue a career in claims.

Key #4: Insurance Policy Knowledge

Knowing how to read and apply an insurance policy is very important for any adjuster and hiring companies know it. If you have worked in the insurance industry before and have a basic knowledge of insurance terms and concepts you shouldn’t fail to portray as much in your resume. Even if it is as simple as having read your own homeowner’s or auto policy (more than most do!), you will want to let your prospective employer’s know about your comfort level with insurance policy jargon and interpretation.

Key #5: Time Management and Personal Accountability

Working as a claims adjuster, especially if you want to be an independent, requires outstanding time management as well as personal initiative and accountability. In putting together your resume, be sure to think about various experiences in your professional history in which multi-tasking and personal accountability were required and met. Within reason and your own honest ability, project the most professional, capable, can-do image possible. This, as much as anything, will leave a positive and lasting impression on your future employer.

A Final Thought on Your Adjuster Resume…

As resumes and curriculum vitaes are submitted more and more in electronic form, there is a temptation to lower your standards for the appearance and grammatical integrity for your resume. After all, we don’t observe Strunk and White’s Elements of Style when emailing and text messaging – why should we really observe those old-fashioned standards when posting an electronic resume? Indeed, many optimistic job seekers are submitting 2nd to 3rd grade quality material to career sites on the Web. Is it any wonder that no one is giving them a second glance?

Keep your standards high!

Take the time to write a well-considered, grammatically sound, and visually pleasing resume. And if you create your resume according to the 5 keys above, you will absolutely gain a competitive advantage as you look to launch or advance your insurance adjuster career.
