There are a few simple ways to tell if your air duct cleaning contractor did a good, thorough job.
First of all, the air duct cleaning contractor should have accessed all areas of the heating or cooling system, including all its components; the fans, drain pans, coil and filters, plenums, etc. They should also show you that all ducts and plenums (areas where air is mixed like joists, crawl spaces, etc.) are completely cleaned and free of dust, debris and mold.
There are a few other easy ways to tell if your air duct cleaner did a good job. Here’s a good checklist to have handy…
Check the heat exchanger surface, it should be visibly clean. The sides of the coil should be clean. Shine a flashlight through the cooling coil. It should shine right through if it is really dust free. The cooling fins should be straight and not bent, and the cooling coil’s drainage pans clean. The blower blades completely dust free. The compartment is clean and dirt free. All filters are installed properly, clean and fit snugly. Interior ducts are free of all dirt. Fiberglass ducts are intact and undamaged. Access doors are closed tightly and the right hardware has been used to secure them. All grills and registers are cleaned and secured in place. If there was mold, all mold should be gone from ducts and heating system. Your heating or cooling system is performing as it should.
Your air duct cleaner should have also made sure to protect your home and furniture from dust and debris. If any damage occurred to your home, notify your contractor immediately.
All air duct cleaners should use the appropriate vacuum and filtering material for indoor use. Contact the NADCA if you feel your home air duct cleaner did not do a good job.
