The only time to talk about salary with a prospective employer is after you have been told, in clear, unmistakable terms, that they want to hire you.

Once you are certain they want you, THEN talk money. The most basic principle in your salary negotiation should be: get them to propose a number first. Unless the company is unwilling to negotiate on salary at all, you are in a better position to obtain the highest possible figure if you find out what the company is willing to pay before you disclose what you want.

This is why:

The offer may be for more than you were going to ask. You end up with a better salary just by accepting their initial offer.

If you disclose your number first and you are very low in relation to the prevailing market, they may think you lack confidence, and begin to have second thoughts about you.

If you disclose your number first and you are far too high, they may think your price is out of the question and break off the discussion.

If you talk first, the company knows the figure is the maximum they have to pay to get you. You set a ceiling on your price tag, because once you quote a number you can adjust it downward, but not upward. They will probably make an offer below your figure, knowing they can always come back up to that price if they have to.

In a salary negotiation, when the company talks first, you can be certain the figure they mention is their minimum offer, and you should be able to nudge it upward from that point. If they mention a salary range, come back with your own range at the upper level of theirs. Say the employer tells you they are going to pay somewhere in the range of $45,000 to $50,000 for this job. You reply that considering the hard work you will put into this job to do it right, you feel your salary should be in the area of $48,000 to $53,000. You set up a bargaining situation in which you should be likely to strike a deal at $50,000 to $52,000.

Your salary negotiation is not complete until you discuss the future. Even if you start at a generous salary, it may be a poor deal for you if you simply cannot get a decent raise until you are old and gray. Before you accept any offer, ask about company guidelines and timetable for advancement.

In order to be considered successful, what would you be expected to accomplish in the first six months on the job? In the first year? Without an understanding of what the employer believes constitutes successful job performance, you may have a tough time knowing how you are doing, or in justifying a salary increase when the time comes.

When will you receive your first salary review?

Assuming your performance is top-flight, what sort of increase might you resonably expect to receive?

The employer will not make any firm promises to you at this point, but you should be able to get some indication of what it takes to be successful in the company and what short-term rewards you can shoot for.

Annually you get one opportunity to showcase your contributions to your workplace with a view to getting a raise. Do it well or you might find yourself waiting another 12 months for a chance at a salary increase. Prepare for a good performance review by following these tips.

1. Obtain comments quickly. Following a performance review, you will gain insight into last year’s job performance. You can make positive changes in your work habits to impress your employer. To know you’re on the right track, go over your last review often to ensure that your employer will see some major improvements in your work.

2. Get ready to discuss your weaknesses. Everybody has room for development. Get ready for your performance review by evaluating ay weaknesses that might have stifled your work throughout the year. You should consider some options you can use to deal with these weaknesses such as speaking to a mentor or attending seminars.

3. Obtain a thankyou letter. If you have done a great job and been thanked for it, have the person write you a quick letter about it. Letters from a former boss or client will be well looked upon during a performance review. Keep all such letters and bring this file to your performance review so that you can point out your best efforts. Why not highlight the best paragraphs in the letters to allow your employer to briefly skim through them.

4. Get a list of yearly achievements ready. Make a list of all of your achievements throughout the course of your employment. Schooling and training will help to reinforce your commitment to work. Remember everything you have achieved in the past year and will ensure that none of your contributions go without notice. Talking about these achievements, furthermore, can only help performance reviews and put the whole interview in a positive light. Add this list to your performance review file.

5. Set some goals for yourself and write them down. Your boss likes to see that you are motivated and ambitious as the year progresses. Appear to be always moving forward by having your personal and professional goals set out. It should include any projects you hope to develop or further jobs that you want to apply for. Perhaps you want to get an article published in a professional journal. Demonstrate initiative by creating your own goals and showing them to your boss.

6. Pass along your file to your company a month before the review. If the boss decides to complete the paperwork early, your letters of commendation and other documents will be there to positively influence their decision.

7. Keep your expectations sensible. Prior to receiving a performance review, it is important to temper expectations with reality. The budget might not always include salary raises but that does not imply that you should not ace your performance review. Highlight your skills and talents at an annual performance review and eventually, your boss will reward you with a well-deserved raise.

Job hunting is more competitive than it has been in years. The present economy means that there are countless newly-unemployed people looking for the same jobs you are. Therefore it is more important than ever to know everything you can about job hunting skills.

Make sure everyone you know is aware that you are looking for a new job. Most jobs are never advertised and therefore if you are searching only in newspapers and online job sites, you are missing a lot of opportunities. Utilize social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter to get it out there that you are looking for work. Just remember to use social networking wisely. Anything and everything that you put on the web is something that a potential employer can see. Therefore, choose wisely before you share too much in cyberspace.

Research companies in your area and check their websites. Jobs may be listed there that are not listed elsewhere. If you are interested in working for a particular firm, call them, send them your resume and follow it up with a phone call. Get the name of a contact person to speak with there.

Create a sensational resume, having spent a great deal of time on it. Have it proofread and critiqued by several people. Remember to tailor it to every job you apply on. It will make a huge difference in getting interviews, as the resume typically makes the very first impression that someone has of you. Grab them with a great ?Career Objective? that is perfectly tied to the job you are seeking. Use resume buzz words and terms from their job description throughout the resume and cover letter to help cinch the fact that you are the perfect fit for the job.

Write thank you notes after a job interview. This is a crucial step that many people skip. Doing this one thing can make the difference between choosing you or someone else for the job. Be prompt with the note; send it the same day as the interview. Send thank you notes individually to all those who interviewed you. Reiterate your desire to work at the firm, your suitability for the job, add anything you may have forgotten to mention and above all, thank the interviewer for their time and the opportunity.

Prepare well for interviews. Learn everything you can about the company you are being interviewed for. Prior to the interview have intelligent questions formulated that show that you have knowledge of the company, because the interviewer will always ask if you have any questions. Practice the answers to typical interview questions. Write out the answers and rehearse them, so that you feel comfortable answering them during the stress of the interview. Have impeccable grooming and dress your best for the interview. Remember that first impressions are made in the first seconds you meet someone, so put your best foot forward, radiate confidence and offer a firm handshake to create the best impression possible.

Treat the job hunt like you would a job. Start early in the day and keep going until the end of the workday. Dress like you are going to work, or even better. Do not sink into the trap of depression because you are job hunting. Strive to do your best at job hunting, because that is your job if you are out of work.

By working hard and putting the required effort into your job hunt, you can be confident in the fact that you are doing all you possibly can to find a job. Be patient and use your imagination as you seek opportunities. Before you know it, you?ll find the perfect job just for you.

One of the greatest mysteries associated with applying for a job is how to create a good reference list. Because not every employer even requests this list as a part of the application process, it can often be difficult to know exactly who should be listed and when.

One key to remember is even if you don?t know whether references are necessary, it?s good to think of some people you might want to consider just in case. But that?s just one consideration to make regarding reference lists. Here are a few others that you might want to keep in mind ?

Make Your List Employer-Specific

While it?s great to have your list of ?reliables? to work with for every job that you apply for, some references are better for some jobs than others. For instance, suppose you?ve held jobs at both a non-profit organization and Fortune 500 company as a mid-level sales rep. Now you?re applying for a job at another non-profit organization in a slightly higher position and would like to use your boss from the Fortune 500 company as your reference because you had a better rapport with him.

While a reference from a manager at a Fortune 500 company is incredibly impressive, it may be better to use a reference from a member of the non-profit organization you worked for. A reference from the organization would be more employer-specific because he or she can attest to your knowledge of the non-profit world. Of course, when making this choice, it?s good to consider how long you worked for the organization and how much of a contribution you made. If you didn?t make a huge contribution to the organization, or can?t find a good reference, then the Fortune 500 company may work better for you.

Help References Turn Your Negative Points into Positives

On almost any job you?ve held, there is the possibility of you having made a minor ? or even major ? screw-up. Either that or you may have had a weak trait that seemed to be the underlying theme of your stay at an employer. No matter what your negative point may have been, it?s a good idea to help your reference turn that negative into a positive.

For instance, if you had a problem with being organized at your last employer ? and you have listed a reliable reference from this company ? it?s good to let that person know that you are now much more organized than when you were employed there. Also, it?s good to remind your reference of any great or memorable accomplishments that they can mention when the hiring manager calls.

Don?t Forget to Obtain Permission

If you?re going to use a person as a reference on your list, it?s important that you obtain permission to use his or her name. This not only makes sure that the person is prepared to make comments about you if asked, but also, it ensures that you don?t request a recommendation from a person who doesn?t think very highly of your work ethic or capabilities.

Once you?ve taken the necessary steps to create a good list, your next step is to begin sending off applications. With any luck, this will help you obtain the job you truly want and deserve.

Ah yes, the glamorous life. We all dream about it. Working on a cruise ship may be one of the most glamorous jobs you can possibly land. At least that?s what many people think. I mean after all, you?ve got the gambling and the girls and the parties and all that great food and?okay, hold the phone. News flash folks?it?s still a job. Last I looked up that word in the dictionary it didn?t come with a pretty picture attached to it.

Truth is, working on a cruise ship, depending on what job you have, may be one of the most stressful and demanding that you could possibly land?if you?re lucky(???) enough to get one. Think about it. You?re responsible, at least in part, for the happiness of a lot of people. Remember, these folks have paid good money to take one of these cruises and the last thing that want is for somebody to ruin their good time because they don?t take their job seriously?even if all you?re doing is serving drinks all day.

Sure, the scenery is beautiful and let?s face it, it?s still a lot better than working in a stuffy office. That is of course unless you?re stuck working in the galley all day. Then it can be as bad as working at the local diner. Except at the local diner, your customers don?t expect their meals to taste like they were prepared for the Queen of England. Or maybe they do. After all, some people can be pretty demanding. If you?ve worked any kind of job before in your life, you know it?s true.

The point is, and I hope I?m making it clear, working on a cruise ship, all the glamour aside, is a big responsibility. And don?t think the pay is anything out of Donald Trump land. Trust me, there are plenty of jobs that pay a lot more and come with a lot less stress.

In part two, I?m going to go over a few jobs that you can expect to find on a cruise ship. In the meantime, check out the link in my signature for a review of a great resource that will greatly help you land that job of your dreams.

Or nightmares, whichever they may be.

In part one I wrote on this subject, I discussed the reality of working on a cruise ship?how it?s not all fun and games. Well, if you?re still with me, this article is going to go over just a few of the many jobs that you?ll find available to work on any standard cruise line. Hopefully, you?ll find something that is just right for you.

Let?s start with one that very few guys know about, and yes?it is a real cruise ship job. I am talking about a gentleman dance host. No, this isn?t some guy who grabs a mic and tries to get people out on the dance floor. This person takes ladies who are there, unescorted, and takes them onto the dance floor and dances with them. Now how is that for a made in heaven job? Obviously, the person who applies for this position has to be charming, polite and somebody who a woman wouldn?t mind being seen with. In other words guys, you can?t look like Quasi Moto.

Another great job, if you have some kind of skill, is an onboard instructor. These are people who teach anything from art to scuba diving. For most of these positions, you will have to show some kind of certification that you are qualified to teach. For others, like teaching passengers to play Texas Hold ?Em, all you have to do is show a proficiency at the game. These are some of the most fun jobs on a cruise ship because they give you the chance to interact with a lot of people.

Of course, if you?re not the interacting kind, there are plenty of cruise ship jobs that don?t require you to mingle with the passengers. One such place is in the engine room. Naturally, to land a job as either the chief engineer, first, second or third engineer, motorman, fitter, wiper, chief electrician, air conditioning tech or any of the other jobs available in the engineering department, you have to have some skills and in most cases, show some kind of certification. But if you want to stay away from the passengers, this is the place to be. Nobody will even know you exist.

The process of creating a resume can definitely be a daunting one. There are so many aspects to consider throughout the creation process, including spelling, grammar, and of course, making sure to incorporate the right jobs, duties fulfilled, and anything else that ensures the hiring manager understands your worth.

With so much to consider, it?s no wonder people have a difficult time sorting out all of the details. To help you sort out your own resume-writing venture, let?s take a look at a few ?dos? of resume writing that can make the process flow smoother.

Make Your Resume Action-Based

One mistake that job seekers make when creating their resume is writing out the responsibilities they were given when employed at a company, rather than noting the goals they accomplished. For example, if you created a system for sorting and organizing paper and electronic files as a secretary, instead of stating that your ?responsibilities included sorting and organizing paper and electronic files,? you can make the process action-based.

In other words, try stating that you ?designed and developed a filing system that maintained both paper and electronic files for the entire office.? The more specific you are about what you accomplished, the easier the prospective employer can create a vivid image of your capabilities.

Use the Right Keywords

When creating your resume, ?do? try to incorporate keywords that define the industry you?re working in. What are keywords exactly? They are words or phrases that are deemed popular in the industry you?re working in. For instance, in the pharmaceuticals industry, you may use the word ?pharma? because it is easily identifiable by an industry professional. Or in marketing, you might want to utilize the phrase ?trade show? because this is something marketers very often participate in.

By incorporating keywords into your resume, you can make sure that any scanning software can catch the words to help sort your resume accordingly. This increases your chances of having your resume noticed ? especially if you apply online ? and gives employers an idea of just how much you know about your industry.

Know the Purpose of Your Resume

Another ?do? that?s important to keep in mind when writing your resume is knowing its purpose, which is to land an interview. Very often, job seekers become accustomed to creating carbon-copy resumes that look good, read well, but present the same information over and over again with no real purpose in mind. So instead of jotting down carbon-copy information that sounded good for the last resume, why not think of what you can put in this resume that will impress this prospective employer ? and hopefully help you get your foot in the door for an interview?

Use Bullet Points

If you want to make sure that the hiring manager can easily flow through your resume, it?s a good idea to use bullet points. While it may be tempting to write paragraphs as your great ideas flow through your fingers, it?s usually better to separate the ideas on paper to help the manager clearly identify the main points of your resume.

Knowing what to add to your resume can help improve its quality ten-fold. So keep these ?dos? in mind as you write what may be the masterpiece of all resumes.

Searching for a job in a tough economy can be extremely challenging. This is especially true if it seems impossible to get past the first interview. Unfortunately, some people seem to have this sort of luck. So what can be done about it? Is there a secret to getting the employer of your choice to call you back for a second interview ? and perhaps hire you for the position? There are a few tips that you can utilize to get you on the right track. Let?s look at what they are ?

Look at Your Interviewing Skills

If you?re having a difficult time getting past the first interview then the first place you?ll want to look for improvement is your actual interviewing skills. It may be that you aren?t presenting yourself in the most professional manner in the interview. Or you may be saying a few things that show you lack confidence. The point is, if you?re finding that you?ve been to multiple interviews and you can?t seem to get any further than that then you may want to take a closer look at what you can improve. For one, take a look at what?s on your resume. It may be that your resume only focuses on the responsibilities you?ve been given over the years, versus the duties you?ve fulfilled and skills you bring to the table. Expressing what you?ve accomplished says a lot about what you can get done with the current employer. Also, if you?re suffering from interviewing jitters, it doesn?t hurt to do a ?dress rehearsal? of sorts with a friend. This might help boost your confidence for the next interview.

Consider Getting More Training

Another problem that you may want to consider that might explain why you may not be able to get past the first interview is the number of qualifications you?re bringing to the table. Sometimes you may be trying to apply for highly competitive positions that require a little bit more training to help you match up with your competition. If this is the case then it might not hurt to watch what trends are popular in your field then take time to learn whatever you need to learn in order to get on par with those trends. For some, this means taking a class or two to get on track. While for others, it may simply mean meeting up with a mentor who can give boatloads of great advice.

Find Something to Do With Your Time

A great way to keep yourself busy and boost confidence for your next interview is to get out there and volunteer. By taking on various projects while waiting for your next job to appear, you can learn new skills, enhance old ones, and get yourself used to being in a working environment. If nothing else, you?ll be able to improve your confidence before going into your next interview. It can feel discouraging to only ever land a first interview without getting to a second one, or being hired for a job. But don?t give up on your goal. By taking on these tips, you should be able to land the job you want in no time.

Did you know that it takes less than 30 seconds for an employer to look at your resume? Thirty seconds determines if your resume makes it to the second round, which could be an interview, or is filed in the round filing cabinet. So what can you do to give yourself the competitive edge? Your resume has to capture the employer?s attention. In today?s economic environment, the competition for jobs is fierce. There are so many people vying for work that your resume really does have to stand out to get noticed. The resume is an expression of yourself, so you have to stand out, you have to get noticed. Here are what I consider to be the three top resume writing mistakes that people make.

Mistake 1: Listing Your Job Duties Instead of Your Accomplishments

Avoid statements such as ?Job Duties? or ?Job Responsibilities?. Employers want to know about your specific accomplishments and contributions to your previous employer. Did you save money, improve a process, solve a problem? By listing your accomplishments you are letting the employer know you can accomplish the work. This will certainly set you apart from the competition. When listing your accomplishments use bullet statements and action words instead of a narrative paragraph. Remember you have 30 seconds to get your point across, so make it easy to read.
For example, instead of:

? I wrote down my duties in a job manual
? I reorganized the publications and forms department

Use this instead:

? Constructed a procedure manual giving step by step instructions on how to bill a client
? Completely restructured a failing publications and forms department into a model department

Mistake 2: Not Using Key Words

Do you know that 80% of resumes are scrubbed through a database looking for key words? Those resumes where key words are identified get noticed by employers. Use key words in your qualifications and accomplishments. Think of them as encoding your resume with powerful words. Another tip is to read the job posting closely; key words employers are looking for are usually in the posting. There are many websites that list key words, one of my favorites is resumebuzzwords.net.

Mistake 3: Sending the Resume as an Attachment without Knowing how it will look

Have you ever opened an attachment and found it completely messed up? Somehow in the transmission the layout became distorted, the bullets were out of alignment, or the top of page 2 ended up on the bottom of page 1. The same thing can happen to your resume if you don?t do a test run. Email your resume to a few friends as an attachment and confirm how it looks on their computers. If it looks good, send it off to the employer. If there are problem you want to know about it now. You may have to save your resume in a text format with a .txt file extension. Making a .pdf version of your resume is another option. A variety of software applications are available to this.

Jason Kay recommends reading resume service reviews before choosing a resume writing service.

There are literally, millions and millions of Government jobs out there and there is actually a specific process you need to complete in order to apply for such a job. The benefits, health, dental, paid vacation and holidays are outstanding and they are all provided through taxpayer?s money.

There are resources available online that makes looking for a government job easier than hoofing around town looking door to door. Here are the steps you need to know:

1) Current Openings: You will need to look at the current openings in your area first and any job search site can help you with that. USAJobs.gov is the best place to search for a government job. From this you can decide which jobs are of interest to you.

2) Application: You can fill out an Optional Application for Federal Employment (OF612). This is a downloadable file in Microsoft Word (.doc) format. Once you fill it out you can print it. Optionally, you can write a federal resume. These resumes must contain additional information than private sector resumes and are formatted a bit differently. Get more information at KSADoctor.com.

3) Information: You will need to provide certain information as well:

a. Full name
b. Mailing address
c. Phone numbers, day, night, mobile
d. Social Security Number
e. Country Of Citizenship
f. Highest Federal Civilian Grade, if any
g. Education ? school name, address, degrees, majors
h. Work Experience ? fully detailed information
i. Other qualifications ? job related training, skills, certificates, leadership, honors, awards, etc. etc.

4) Civil Service Exam: There is a number of civil service exams possible and each department has their own tests and how they administer them. There are written tests, essay tests, in-basket tests, assessment centers, performance tests, physical abilities tests, psychological tests and of course an interview. Not all of these tests are needed for each posting; this was just a list of what types of tests there are for various government positions. There are online resources for information on the individual tests.

a. These tests are scheduled to happen at certain times and you will be assigned a date and time to appear for your testing.
b. In order to be considered and possibly hired for a position, you must pass any and all tests given to you. If you are not hired during the valid date for the test results, you will need to re-take the tests at another time.

5) Interview(s): That?s right, there will probably be more than one interview and just like the Civil Service Tests, you must do well on all subsequent interviews to receive a job offer.

Just because you do well on everything, does not mean you will get the job for which you apply. As with any other employment offer, there are other people vying for the same job as you. Being that this is a government posting, the number or people applying is probably even greater than in the private sector. Be sure to really study up on the specifics of what will be expected of you throughout the screening process.

Lastly, depending on the position, some agencies may want you to undergo a physical examination, drug screening or a probation period before hiring and these periods can last anywhere from 6 months to a year. That?s it, now you know how to apply for government jobs.

Jason Kay recommends visiting KSADoctor.com to learn lots more information relating to federal government job applications. They can assist with federal resume writing, KSA writing, and more.

Everything helps in the search for a job, especially in an economy where things are tight and jobs are hard to find. Therefore job seekers should put every advantage on their side. Posting a resume online is a very good way to publicize yourself and your abilities. A company on the hunt for the right individual might just come across it and contact you.

However, putting your personal information on the internet leaves you vulnerable to spam, identity theft and much more. Knowing the proper way to post your resume will help you increase your visibility; reduce the risk of being a victim of crime and limit the amount of spam you have to deal with.

1. Remove any contact information from your resume, with the exception of an email address you have created specifically for this purpose before posting it. This will help to protect your privacy. Make sure that you check this email address regularly so you don?t miss out on any good opportunities. Make sure that the email service has a spam-guard feature.

2. Make sure your resume is short and to the point. Be truthful and be sure the resume is free of typos, grammatical and spelling errors. It needs to be eye-catching and easy to read. Many sites request that you put a title on your resume. Be sure it is catchy and memorable.

3. Judiciously select the site on which you will post your resume. Make sure that it is not open to the public free of charge. Companies should have to pay a fee in order to browse through the resumes there. Having access to resumes by paid membership only reduces the risk of false leads, spam and other abuse.

4. Choose online services, which allow you to make and save multiple copies of your resume on their site. Most services also include a job bank as a part of their site and by having your resumes already saved on the site, it will make it much easier and quicker for you to apply on jobs advertised there.

5. Choose resume posting services that will allow you to put your resume on multiple job boards at the same time for no additional charge. This increases the chance that your resume will be found by someone looking for job candidates.

6. When you have selected where you will post your resume, you simply need to either copy and paste it to the site or upload it, depending on the site?s requirements.

Taking the time to post your resume online will be beneficial in the long run for a variety of reasons. You will open the door to opportunity by allowing potential employers access to your resume. Since many jobs are never posted, countless companies looking to recruit check data banks of resumes to find potential candidates.
